Does Prohibition Work?

.

Some people are still functioning under the illusion that drug use can be stopped by government violence and threat of violence.  Is prohibition a sensible, logical, or reasonable way to deal with drug misuse?   Before you answer that question, consider each of the factors below on this page:

.

Prohibition Produces Crime

.

Outlawing certain drugs  raises their price,   pushes the activity "underground,"   makes criminals wealthy,   finances terrorism,   corrupts government officials,   and  does absolutely nothing to stop drug use  (Please see the complete list on our home page.)   Outlawing marijuana actually encourages more drug use because the only way many people can pay for their habit is to get their friends hooked on drugs.

The huge profits encourage people to become criminals.    Seventy percent of all crime is drug related.   Keeping drugs illegal  also supports a huge, multi-billion-dollar,  police/prison industry.   Keeping drugs illegal creates morality-enforcers and pushes the country in the direction  of a police-state.   Illegal drugs are at the core of crime everywhere on the planet.   A  significant percent of the world's economy is based upon the sale of illegal substances.

Overwhelming evidence shows that the prohibition of alcohol during the 1920's was  a complete failure and that it spawned the birth of what is now a global-level, semi-secret, organized-crime network.

In the face of overwhelming evidence that the prohibition of alcohol was a social disaster and in the face of even more compelling evidence that the present prohibition of certain drugs is a disaster of far greater proportions, politicians are still waging war against the of use of certain declared-to be-illegal drugs.

Before we answer the question, "WHY?" let's look at what drug prohibition is costing us:

.

The Price of Prohibition

.

The prohibition of certain (declared-to-be-illegal) substances:

Alcohol and Tobacco

Even though nicotine is more addictive than heroin and even though selling alcohol, and nicotine result in over five-hundred- thousand deaths each year and cost billions of dollars in damages each year, it's perfectly legal to advertise, promote, sell, and openly use these two drugs.   Did you ever wonder why it's perfectly OK to sell alcohol and nicotine which kill over five-hundred-thousand people each and every  year, and at the same time, it's illegal to sell marijuana which has never, directly killed anyone in all the years of recorded medical history ?

 .

Follow the Money Trail

In the United states alone, the illegal drug industry is a multi--billion-dollar-per-year business.   Estimate range for  $250 billion to $750 billion,  annually, and that doesn't even count the vast police, military, and prison industry that, for it's own survival, vitally needs to keep drugs illegal.   If you want to know why selling alcohol and nicotine are legal and marijuana is not, simply follow the money trail.   Ask yourself these questions:

Who is rich because certain chemicals are illegal?

Who would lose money if they became legal?

What would happen to the economy if drugs became legal?

One of the main reasons why certain drugs are illegal is because there is an incredible price markup between production cost and final sale price.   For example, cocaine sells to the consumer for about 170 times its production cost, and the buds and flowers from a plant that grows profusely on its own almost anywhere (marijuana  --  cannabis sativa) sells for more per ounce than gold.

Sept 2009 Update:    Because the money interests have destroyed the economy, the price of gold has risen from about $375 per ounce to about $1,000 per ounce, thus, the statement that "marijuana sells for more per ounce than gold" is no longer accurate.   (June 2010 -- Gold is now over $1,200 per ounce.)

 .

Political Power

A  second major reason why certain drugs are illegal is that drug money buys political power.   As you must realize by now, political power is the only thing keeping drugs illegal.   Imagine that every year you had several billion dollars that you needed to launder, to whom would you turn?

The money launderers are taking their portion of this sixty-five-billion-dollar-per-year business.   Did you ever wonder who has the financial clout to launder $250 billion dollars every year and get away with it?

If your business brought in several billions of dollars every year and you could secretly and indirectly support the political campaigns of those who would keep your business profitable, would you do so.?   (See the next section.)

 .

Why Politicians Can't Support

Legalizing Presently-Illegal Drugs:

If you had millions of dollars at your disposal, and if you were also morally bankrupt, could you figure out ways to secretly financially support  or otherwise assist those politicians who vote to keep drugs illegal?   Of course you could!   And you could also do so without them even knowing that they had a secret benefactor.

And the opposite is also true.   With equal secrecy, you could be a career destroyer of those who support the decriminalization of the now-illegal drugs.

It's highly unlikely that anyone would actually give American politicians the "silver of lead" choice.   Why?   Because they don't need to.   It doesn't take a genius to figure out how the system works.   And besides, it's much safer,  far easier, and much more fun to manipulate their circumstance and simply get them out of political office.   Nobody goes to jail for killing another's career.   That's an all-too-common practice, but being linked to murder brings with it some  rather serious problems.

Silver or Lead

The third major reason why drugs are still illegal is that, in many countries,  those responsible for drug peddling offer politicians and those who might oppose the drug cartels "an offer they can't refuse."    They say, "Do you want silver of lead?" (money or bullets) "Take this money and look the other way or we will kill you and your entire family."   If offered such a choice, how would you respond?

 .

Marijuana  -- What's a Reasonable Price?

At the time this thesis was originally written, (2002)  marijuana, which grows like a weed almost anywhere, was  more expensive per ounce than gold.   It cost about $400 per ounce only because it was illegal.

Today, 2009, it costs legal growers roughly $10 to $15 per once to grow high-grade marijuana.  This would make a reasonable sale-to-the-consumer price of anywhere from $30 to $50 an ounce.

If the criminal sanctions were removed, it could also be home grown completely free of any significant costs by almost anybody who has a flower pot, some seeds,  and a little water

Eliminating the Middle Men:

Another factor to consider is that the growing and selling of marijuana is a relatively simple process.   Expensive equipment or machinery are completely absent form the process.   It's so simple that almost anybody with a little common sense and the willingness to learn how, and a little bit of land can grow reasonably-high-grade marijuana.

Major corporations that are required to commercially produce, distribute, and sell alcohol, tobacco and thousands of other products would be kept out of business by local, small growers.   Also the middle-men between growers and retail sellers would be almost completely eliminated, as would be the necessity of long-distance transportation.

Also consider The Law of Supply and Demand.   That law, in essence, say that more produces would result in lower prices.   When marijuana is given it's freedom, the free market will set the price.   Regarding the sale of commercially-produced products, a free market is something that hasn't seen in the united states  for about one hundred years.

Reference:   The Illusion of a Free Market

Why this Is Important:

Are you aware that the people between a product's producer and you the buyer raise a product price by, on average, ten times production cost.   In other words, you pay about $100 for products that are produced at a cost of $10.   Regarding production and sale of marijuana, having a multitude of growers, eliminating most of the middle men, and drastically reducing shipping and transportation costs would result in a totally free market.   Thus the present price of about $400 per ounce would be dramatically reduced

Quotes on Legislating Morality..

"Prohibition goes beyond the bounds of reason in that it attempts to control a man's appetite by legislation and makes a crime out of things that are not crimes...   A prohibition law strikes a blow at the very principle upon which our government was founded."

_________ Abraham Lincoln -- 1840

 .

"If you'd like an unbeatable recipe for greed, graft, political corruption, money laundering, fascism, tyranny, environmental destruction, and for every other type of crime and unethical activity you can possibly imagine., here it is  --  Secrecy,  Big money and Concentrations of power.   Marijuana Prohibition has all three."

________ Quote from "An Interview with the Devil"  by R. Robin Cote'

 .

The Illegal Drug World Depicted on Film..

.

For a glimpse into what keeping drugs illegal is doing to the world, see the feature length film titled “The Untouchables,"  about the prohibition of alcohol, staring Sean Connery.    Then multiply the criminal activity seen in that film by about ten thousand  --- change the date to today  ---  expand the setting from just the United Sates to a global setting  ---  and you have an excellent symbolic description of the present-day criminal activity that is directly funded by the billions of dollars from the sale of illegal drugs  ---  drugs that the public will buy even at outrageous prices.

 .

Political Instability:

In many of the countries where illegal drugs are produced, the governments are politically unstable.   For example, in Columbia, South America, anti-government forces are being financed by money from the sale of illegal drugs, and any politician opposing the drug lords is subject to assassination.  The man presently running for president in Columbia (May 2002) has been the subject of approximately fifteen assassination attempts.

 .

Sex, Drugs, and Rock & Roll Music

Most of you weren't around in the early 1960's when the older generation of that day was telling us that sex, drugs and rock & roll music were about to take us all straight to hell.

Sex hasn't changed much since then, except that now, sex can kill you if you get AIDS.   Regarding rock and roll, it's not the music that was condemned, it was the sensual/sexual dance movements that were considered to be of the devil.   Dance, like sex hasn't changed much since then, either.

But what about drugs?   Alcohol and nicotine have killed millions in the past fifty years and yet they are both still completely legal and readily available.   The drug industry has produced a plethora of new chemical that are, today, misused by the millions.   Crack cocaine has reared its deadly head and heroin sales have continued pretty much as usual.

On the bright side, LSD and Iowaska (ayahuaska) have come onto the scene.   Both, when used as part of a spiritual journey, can provide life-changing insights into the nature of reality.   Unfortunately, they are both considered as illegal.   Until that changes, Marijuana, which has still never directly killed anybody, is our best option for opening the window to one's soul.    REFERENCE:

 .

Another Hidden Agenda of The Powers That Be

There's an additional factor in the drug controversy that is rarely given any attention.   That factor involves the long term affect on the beliefs and behaviors of those experiencing the mind-altering states produced by alcohol, nicotine, and the presently-illegal substances.

Alcohol and nicotine are mind deadeners.    Heroin and cocaine are not only mind deadeners, they are also life-destroyers.

When used as part of a spiritual journey, marijuana and LSD are consciousness expanders.   Peyote, magic mushrooms and ayahuaska (more commonly known as "iowaska") are so potent that one would not use these three substances for anything other than a spiritual journey.

When we relate the long term affect of using mind altering substances and the apparent intentions of those presently running the world, we find this correlation:   Alcohol, nicotine, cocaine and heroin are excellent tools to sedate and dull the minds of the masses.

Marijuana, LSD, Peyote, magic mushrooms and iowaska are in opposition to those who want to maintain their elitist power positions.   Why?   Because these substances when used as part of a spiritual journey, expose the absurdity of the present political, religious, and economic systems.   They expose the truth about the unity of everything and everybody.   One cannot see the truth and continue to live by the lies that control the present political, religious, and economic systems.

A significant portion of the people have not been mind-deadened by an excess of religion or by the worship of money.   When these people experience a spiritual awakening, it very often dramatically changes their lives.   To prevent these open-minded people from seeing the truth is one of the major reasons why the mind-expanding substances are illegal.

 .

How to Stop Destructive Behavior

What is the most efficient way to change someone else's behavior?   Any physiologist worth his salt will tell you that people always take actions that they perceive to be in their own best interest, and that to change a person's behavior, all you have to do is take away the positive incentive or add a negative consequence that significantly outweighs the benefits they receive and the behavior will automatically change.   The sale of the presently-illegal **tlc6t  drugs could be drastically reduced by removing the exorbitant profits that their sales generate.

People sell drugs because they perceive that it is in their own best interest to do so.   They sell drugs because doing so is highly profitable.    It's ten to one hundred times more profitable than a normal job  People sell drugs out of desperation.  If your child's well being or even his/her life was on the line, what would you do to obtain the money needed to care for him/her?

 .

file:///C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/Administrator/My%20Documents/MY%20Webs%202/99-Websites-Photos-and-Graphics-Mar-08/New-Graphics-Feb-09/marijuana-leaf-3-Aug-09.jpg     When marijuana becomes legal, the criminal sanctions against its use will disappear, and need for the present, huge police and prison industry will be drastically reduced.

 .

The Bottom Line

.

In every country in the entire world where drugs are illegal, who do you suppose (indirectly, secretly) finances and promotes the election of the politicians who keep drugs illegal?

If you:

  were spiritually ignorant,

were a secret atheist in your core belief,

had absolutely no concern for anybody but yourself,

had absolutely no concern for future generations,

had the ethics of the devil,

had morals equal to a bucket of slime,

had an ego the size of the moon,

were making billions of secret dollars every year, and

could easily acquire anything in the world that money could buy,

what would you do to preserve the status quo?

 .

The New Bottom Line

Sept 2009 Update:    Since this thesis was originally written, (2002) the economic climate has shifted dramatically.   Today, (September 2009) politicians, particularly in California) are desperate for new sources of revenue.   Many countries have decriminalized several drugs and eliminate many of the old restriction on marijuana.   Eleven states in the United States have decriminalized marijuana.

Given these new contexts, it's now very likely that California will in the near future decriminalize the sale of marijuana to the general public for the sake of annually collecting an estimated 1.4 billion dollars in tax revenues.

Those of us who see the absurdity of the present restrictions can assist in speeding up the process.   Please see these two pages:

The Three-Percent Solution     and       De-criminalizing Marijuana

 .

The Real Bottom Line

.

The entire illegal substances debate is really about money.   Like every other major, social problem on the entire planet, this issue is about the conflict of interest that rises up every time anything is done that involves money, and as you know, almost everything on the entire planet involves money

The conflict of interest is between providing the goods and/or service for which one is being paid to provide and making a short-term profit.   When this conflict arises, self-interest wins almost every time.   Fortunately, there are relatively simple ways to eliminate conflicts of interest in both politics and in the business world.   Unfortunately our economic and environmental problems have not quite yet reached the plain, in-your-face, disaster stage, so nobody is willing to let go of their cash cows and do what needs to be done.

If you'd like to know what these plain and simple solutions are, we invite you to examine our True-Corporate-Democracy  website at:

We are well aware that using technically correct grammar would require is to write words such as "presently illegal" and "mutually supporting" without a hyphen.   We have chosen to ignore protocol in favor or ease of understanding on the part of the less sophisticated readers.

We're Walking Our Talk

At TLC-Life-Center

We are demonstrating our proposals by creating two
corporations, one for-profit and one not-for-profit.
They
will function as partners.

  The Corporation:

Our for-profit corporation will be based on The New Corporate World Foundation's Win-Win Business Structure -- a structure in which corporate employees, corporate customers, and the environment hold equal priority with making a profit.   Corporate focus is on the production and use of hemp.

Hemp is an ignored gold mine.   Why?   Because when it is allowed to freely flourish, it will become a multi-billion dollar industry.   For example, hemp will replace trees as a source of fiber for paper, it's medical benefits are profound, and as plastic for auto bodies, its strength and damage resistance will save billions of dollars in auto repairs.

  The Foundation:

We are creating a medical-marijuana, access-assistance foundation.   The Mari-Med Foundation will provide funding and access to medical marijuana for those in need who cannot, by themselves, afford to pay for the products and services.   The Foundation will own controlling  interest in our for-profit corporation so that the majority of the corporate profits will go to the Foundation.

Do You need a Job?

You are invited to examine our websites and determine if you'd like to join the development teams for either our non-profit foundation or our profit-oriented corporation.   If you find the prospect of joining our team intriguing, please go to our website;

and  then contact us.
